Why Pray?

Prayer is one of the essentials of Christian life. It is one of the ways by which we can communicate with God. Even Jesus himself prayed to his father and so should we.

We take prayer very lightly that  most often we think one short prayer a day is okay and we’re good to go. Prayer is so important that it has to be like the air that we breathe. A need that we can’t live without. Most of the time we only pray just to ask something for ourselves and not really to thank him or not even to pray for others. I’m not saying that it’s wrong to pray because you’re asking God of something. It’s good because it shows that we depend on him in everything. What I’m trying to say is its wrong to pray if your motive in praying is just ask and ask and ask selfishly.

God commanded us to pray and here are some of the reasons why:

1. It shows our dependence on God.
– Depending on God for everything is not an easy thing to do.. We tend to depend more on ourselves and our own abilities. (Matt.26:41 Watch and  pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” ) tells that we must pray in order for us not to fall into temptation.

Prayer is so important that it has to be like the air that we breathe. A need that we can’t live without.
There are so many temptation we can face in this life but I think that the temptation in depending on ourselves is one of the hardest crisis we can face. ( Matthew 19:26  But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”) That’s why we need to pray to God, for He is the only one that can change our heart’s desire and give us a humble heart not to think highly of ourselves, but to think of what God can do, for He knows what and when to give our needs.

2. To pray for others
– We are not only to pray for ourselves but also to our brothers and sisters in Christ around us. Jesus sets an example while praying in Gethsemane, there he prayed for peter so that they will not fall into temptation. Our relatives, friends, church mates, work-mates, those other Christians scattered abroad and even those who persecute us ( Matt. 5:44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, ). We are also to pray those people who doesn’t hear yet the word of god.

3. To give thanks to Him
-Since everything comes from him, we ought to thank him everyday, every single second of our lives. There might be some circumstances in our lives that we find it hard to give thanks to. (1Thes. 5:16-18 Rejoice always  pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.) Here Paul tells us to pray continually, in other version they used the term without ceasing, giving thanks in ALL circumstances since it is God’s will for you. It means that all circumstances that happens in your life is given and ordained by God, whether it be good or bad we ought to pray and give thanks for it. (Rom.12:12 rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. )

4. To know God’s will
When we pray, we tell God our heart’s desire. God commanded us to pray but it doesn’t mean that we will get what we pray for.
Sometimes what we want is different from what God has in mind. He will give us what glorifies him the most. ( John 14:13-14 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. ) Instead when we pray, ask for his will to be done, ask for a heart that is humble enough to be satisfied and contented to what God has ordained to happen. It will also help us not to be disappointed when what we pray for is somehow not answered. Jesus showed us on how to pray, when he pray he always say not his will but his father’s will be done. (Mark 14:36 And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”)

It doesn’t matter where you pray or when do you pray because there’s no holier place or time to pray. The important thing is you will set a specific time to personally pray and communicate with God, just like how couples sets time for each other. Let’s not think that when our prayer is  answered, it’s because of the faith and sincerity we put on our prayer. Always bear in mind that we cannot convince or persuade God, because he does everything according to his own pleasure and the display of his glory.
And when he doesn’t give us what we prayed for, we still have hope, for God knows what’s best for his children, ( Matthew 7:11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!). We may not understand fully why, since our ways and his ways, our thoughts and his thoughts are far more different, but God assures us that it’s for our good. (Romans 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good,[a] for those who are called according to his purpose.)
